Set on the banks of the river and famous for the Royal Regatta lies Henley on Thames. Situated in Oxfordshire, England, and only a few miles from the neighbouring counties of Buckinghamshire and Berkshire, Henley on Thames enjoys the reputation of being quite an affluent town.

The town becomes alive in summer with the Royal Regatta, a world famous rowing event, taking place in the first week of July followed by a festival week with all types of music. Opera, swing, jazz and rock are performed with the main events taking place on a floating stage on the river.
The first Oxford and Cambridge boat race took place here in 1839 and from then onwards the town became associated with rowing. Amongst many other places of interest is the River and Rowing Museum. Henley is an ideal place to enjoy from a touring or short break perspective with lots of interesting places to visit.

Stonor Park, five miles north of Henley, is a elegant old manor house situated in one of the most beautiful parks in the South of England. The Wind in the Willows exhibition is a good place to visit for children and adults, making Kenneth Graham’s story of Ratty, Mole and Toad come to life. From April to September afternoon river trips are available as well as the opportunity to hire rowing boats and motor boats.

Henley-on-Thames has excellent shops, restaurants and theatres with the added advantage of the surrounding countryside and riverside attractions. There are many pleasant walks to be had round this area where you can stop and enjoy a relaxing lunch or a welcome drink.

You need to book well in advance for the summer period, especially the two weeks when the Regatta and the festival is on. During this time some local residents move out for the fortnight, letting their houses to tourists. Outside the main summer season, the town is a pleasant work a day commuter town.

Places to stay worthy of a mention include the Red Lion Hotel, located on the banks of the River Thames. This pleasant hotel has an attractive wisteria-clad exterior and individually furnished rooms.

With accommodation in Henley On Thames sometimes being hard to find, visitors should also consider looking a bit farther afield. The White Hart at Nettlebed is a 5 minute drive away and also handy for other tourist attractions including Blenheim Palace, the birthplace of Winston Churchill.
